Bad Skin Habits We're Leaving in 2021

It's the new year, let's start some new, healthy skin care habits! Here are a few bad habits that I think we should avoid in 2022!

Sleeping in Makeup:

Now, am I guilty of doing this in high school? Absolutely. Do I do this now? Heck. No. Sleeping in your makeup is horrible for your skin! It prevents the skin from it's much needed renewal! Residual makeup traps the oil, causing clogged pores and breakouts. Not only does it clog your pores but wearing makeup for prolonged periods of time interrupts cell turnover which can cause fine lines and wrinkles to occur over time! Long story short... sleeping in makeup leads to premature aging so quit doing it! To keep your skin looking radiant and youthful, allow your skin to rejuvenate by removing your makeup every night before you go to bed!

Picking at Your Face:

Soo.. this one is honestly a tough one for me to even speak on because I swear I could be the next Dr. Pimple Popper. (judge me.. I have no shame) The sad truth though is that we have to quit doing it! Picking at your face is horrible for your skin and can cause inflammation to become worse, potential discoloration, might cause scars, and even possibly lead to infection. Ultimately, we just have to learn to be patient and allow our body to heal itself or visit your local esthetician and allow them to safely treat your skin issues!

Following DIY TikTok Skincare Advice:

There is no denying that TikTok has become am amazing source for beauty/fashion tips & hacks. But just like any advice.. it should be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, there truly is some amazing advice that I am 100% in support with BUT there has also been some trash advice. For example, I have seen some people make DIY face masks and include citrus fruits in their mask recipe. While Vitamin C is awesome for brightening your skin, raw lemon juice should not be applied to the skin. This is too harsh and can disrupt the natural pH of skin and potentially make your skin very sensitive to sunlight! In conclusion, just be mindful of the things you see online and do your research before purchasing or testing any skin care products on yourself!

Ignoring Your Neck & Chest:

In 2022, let's not only take care of our face but also our neck & chest. It is so interesting to me that these two places on our body tend to be the first to show sun damage/aging yet we don't do much to prevent it! We focus most of our skin care efforts on our face and neglect the rest of our body! Sunscreens, moisturizers, etc. should not only be applied to your face but also your neck & chest. Take the extra time to add this into your daily routine and I promise you will see the results!

Skipping Sunscreen:

Don't even get me started on this topic. I think back to when I used to lay in the tanning bed in high school and I want to kick myself. As a pale lady myself, I get roasted when I am in the sun so I HAVE to put sunscreen on unless I want to end up looking like a crispy piece of bacon. I know it is annoying to have to apply but it truly makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE in your skin! Sunscreen is so important because it helps prevent sun damage, sun spots, skin cancer, and COLLAGEN DEGRADATION!(aka makes you look older!!) Sunscreen has come such a long way in the last few years and there are TONS of amazing products out there that are great!

Here are a few of my favorite sunscreens:

  • Supergoop!: Overall, great product. I love that is comes in an "unseen" option. Gives a very glowy look to the skin. It doesn't have an overpowering sunscreen smell. I will say though that I wore this to this beach last summer and it got in my eyes and BURNED like crazy so beware if you have sensitive eyes. Click HERE to shop this product.

  • Paula's Choice: This is actually the sunscreen I am currently wearing everyday. I personally love it! It is a very liquidy formula which makes me feel like I don't even have sunscreen on! I have been using it for about 2 months now and think it works great for an everyday sunscreen option. It also layers great under makeup! Click HERE to shop this product.

  • Elta MD: This sunscreen is great for those "no makeup/makeup" days. It is tinted so it does give you the lightest touch of coverage. In my opinion, this is the perfect summer tinted moisturizer! 10/10 I highly recommend. Click HERE to shop this product.

  • Sun Bum: In the summer, this is what I prefer to wear when I am actually out on the lake or at the beach. Sun Bum is an awesome sunscreen brand that really does a great job at protecting you from getting burnt. This is a traditional sunscreen so it is thicker than the other ones I have mentioned. I think when you are actually out in the sun all day you need to be wearing something more heavy duty like this! Click HERE to shop this product.

Taking Really Hot Showers & Baths:

I feel like most people do not realize that super hot water is bad for the skin. (at least I didn't know this until I learned about it!) Hot showers can irritate and dry out your skin. It causes damage to the keratin cells that are located on the outer layer of our skin. Super hot water also causes our skin to not be able to lock in moisture and can cause certain skin conditions to become worse. (for example, eczema) Overall, you can still enjoy a hot shower/bath but just be mindful of just how hot the temperature is and make sure to take care of your skin afterwards!
